Model Comparison

Compare model states and visualize geometric or content-related changes in the viewer

Overview

The model comparison is used to compare different model versions with one another.

Components are evaluated based on their GUID and color-coded as follows:

  • Green: newly added components

  • Red: removed components

  • Yellow: modified components whose GUID has remained the same

The model comparison helps you quickly identify changes between two model versions and review them in detail.

 

Loading Older Model Versions

To compare older model versions, you must first display them in the Viewer.

Procedure

  1. Open the model selection ①

  2. Click the flag icon ② to display all model versions

  3. Select the desired models ① and ②

     

  4. Click Apply ③


The selected model stands will then be available for comparison.

Open and Start the Model Comparison

Once the desired model versions have been loaded, you can start the model comparison.

Procedure

  1. Open the model selection

  2. Click the icon for the model comparison (1)

  3. Select the two models to be compared

  4. Select the appropriate file type ①

    The following are available for selection:

    • Navisworks for .ifc, .nwd, or .nwf
    • Revit for .rvt
    • dxf for .dxf
    • DWG for .dwg

    Next, start the model comparison by clicking ②

Note:

Depending on the size of the models, it may take a few minutes for the comparison interface to appear.

Interface

By default, the model comparison displays not only geometric changes but also changes in information.

If you want to display only geometric changes, you can disable additional analyses.

Show Only Geometric Changes

Under Modification Type ①, you can use the “</>” button ② to disable the display of information changes.

This ensures that only the actual geometric differences between the model versions are displayed.

Hide Modified Components

If you want to display only new and removed components, you can disable the display of modified components.

To do this, turn off the “Modified” button in the interface.

This allows the analysis to be specifically limited to components that have been added or removed.

Notes on evaluation

The model comparison takes different types of changes into account.

These include, in particular:

  • geometric changes

  • transformation changes

  • information changes

Particularly when information changes are enabled, a very large number of changes may be displayed, even if the geometry has not changed.

This applies, for example, to:

  • modified attributes

  • updated metadata

  • stored timestamps

For most use cases, it is therefore recommended to focus on geometric changes,

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

My current model does not seem to be included in the model comparison. Why is that?

Depending on the project, models are only updated at specific intervals. This may happen automatically on a daily basis or at fixed intervals, for example in connection with coordination meetings.

A large number of modified components are being displayed. Why is that?

If geometric changes, transformation changes and information changes are all active at the same time, a large number of differences will be detected. Information changes, in particular, can result from even minor data changes. It is recommended that only geometric changes be enabled.

Can the same model be compared if one version is in RVT format and the other in IFC format?

This is only feasible if components that have not been deleted retain the same GUID

The model comparison tool is particularly useful for users who are checking model statuses, tracking changes or preparing for coordination meetings.
