Manage Disciplines (Admin)

Applies to: KQ Admin, BIM Admin. Disciplines (trades) are used to organize project participants and group sources/model files. Disciplines also serve as the basis for attribute-based processes.

1) Prerequisites

You can only manage disciplines if you have the BIM Administrator role (or higher).

 

2) What is a discipline?

A discipline corresponds to typical trades such as architecture, building services engineering, or electrical engineering. All associated models and sources are stored within a discipline. Disciplines are also required in other areas (e.g., for attributes).

 

3) Create a discipline

  1. Open Administration → Disciplines.

  2. Click New Discipline

  1. Enter:

  • Name of the discipline (e.g., Architecture)

  • Index (determines the sort order; see Section 5)

  1. Save.

Note: In addition to model formats, list or Excel formats can also be used as sources, depending on the setup.


4) Edit or delete a discipline

Edit

  • Disciplines (and sources, if applicable) can be renamed.

Delete

  • Disciplines can be deleted as long as no sources are associated with them.

Important: If a discipline contains sources, those sources must be removed before the discipline can be deleted.

5) Sorting Disciplines (Index)

The order of the disciplines is controlled by the index. This order affects, for example, the sorting in the model selection within the overall model.

6) Define Default Layers

When creating or editing, disciplines can be marked as default layers.

Background: By default, when the overall model is opened, only disciplines and models that are defined as default layers (or in a default view) are loaded.

7) Special Feature: X_automatic

  • The X_automatic discipline exists by default.

  • It is used to assign attributes to the X_Automatic element of a discipline.

  • The discipline and the associated element are automatically created during the model run.

  • Among other things, non-selectable model components and instances are stored there.

8) FAQ

Why are sources grouped by discipline?

Because disciplines reflect the technical structure (trades) and are relevant for downstream processes such as assignments and mappings.

How should I name disciplines?

The names are typically defined in the BIM Execution Plan (BEP). Abbreviations are often used, e.g., ARC/A- (Architecture), E-/ELT (Electrical), GA/MSR (Building Automation).

Why can’t I view or edit all attributes?

This depends on user rights/roles and discipline permissions. This prevents users from outside a discipline from editing values (including attribute changes resulting from the model run).
